Prairie Complex Near Steinberg Skating Rink
Nearly nine acres of restored prairie habitat now exist near here, where only mowed turf and a parking lot once existed. Since restoration of this area began in 2000, the site has developed into a densely vegetated prairie community that is enjoyed by trail users and wildlife alike. The main field of this prairie provides prime Monarch viewing throughout the summer. In addition, the boardwalks that run through this area along the east bank of the waterway offer a great spot for viewing the wide array of wildlife that make the Park their home including purple martins, mink, bats, turtles and dragon flies. This is also the site of Forest Park’s Victorian Footbridge, which dates back to 1885.
